About Los Katíos National Park

Los Katíos National Park, located in the northwest region of Colombia along the border with Panama, encompasses sprawling tropical rainforests, wetlands, and rivers critical to regional biodiversity. The park is situated within the Darién Gap, a dense, roadless swath of jungle that marks the break in the Pan-American Highway. It covers parts of the Antioquia and Chocó departments and protects a unique transition zone of flora and fauna bridging Central and South America. The park's landscape is dominated by lowland rainforest, swamps, and river systems including the Atrato River, one of Colombia’s major waterways. Ecologically, Los Katíos is a hotspot of species richness with over 450 bird species, jaguars, tapirs, giant anteaters, and many threatened amphibians and reptiles. Its ecosystems include tropical forests, savannas, and mangroves that support migratory and resident species. Historically, the park has been home to indigenous Embera and Kuna communities, who maintain cultural ties and sustainable use of natural resources. Recreation opportunities are limited due to the park’s remote location and dense jungle but include guided wildlife observation, birdwatching, and experiencing pristine rainforest environments. Notable natural landmarks include the flooded forests and extensive riverine habitats which attract birdwatchers and naturalists globally. The park’s remoteness and ecological sensitivity appeal to dedicated travelers seeking raw, undisturbed wilderness and important conservation landscapes. Los Katíos protects one of the last major intact rainforests in Colombia, contributing to the preservation of continental biodiversity and ecological corridors.
